Years ago you would be able to find curbside stands along portions of 2nd, 4th, 7th and 9th Streets. Today, the little section on South 9th Street is what we have coined the ‘Italian Market‘. Even so, only half of the 160 stands are currently occupied. Restrictions on what and who can sell have remained in tact for years by the city of Philadelphia.
Finally a shed of light! Last month, a new legislation passed by City Council would transfer the management and rental duties from the city over to the South 9th Street Business Association. The overall look of 9th street wouldn’t change much, but who could rent and what could be sold will bring more diversity, youth and money. The wheeled curbside carts will remain a requirement to these street vendors.

Vendors who currently own carts will be able to keep them while restrictions on the limit you may own has been lifted. The annual rent per stand will remain the same at $300 per year. Applications will be reviewed by a volunteer committee and determined on variety and quality. They will be viewed on a first come- first serve basis.
This change hopes to vitalize South Philadelphia and the Italian Market and how our community can thrive with local goods. If the Italian Market starts booming with craft and art vendors, you’ll find me there on the weekends. I mean what’s better than handmade art and fresh pasta?!

What used to be home to South Philadelphia Florists is now on the market. Including the 4 apartments in the same building. Rooftop gardens have been a hot commodity the last couple years. Especially in Philadelphia where land, green garden space and a backyard can be hard to come by. Looking back, the transformation of the rooftop at The Free Library of Philadelphia’s into a garden space seemed ahead of its time.

Today, you will find more single family homes with green garden space on their roof, their deck, heck anywhere some sunlight may touch. Schools in the area have also started to adopt this trend as an educational and environmentally friendly way to teach young students the importance of green space in urban cities. South Philly High School (South Philadelphia) and Andrew Jackson Elementary (Passyunk Square) have jumped on the green train! While South Philly High has been fundraising, they have reached their first goal and continue to push for more feedback and funds. Looking out at a magnificent skyline view, just imagine the transformation this roof will take on.

As for Andrew Jackson Elementary, they have already implemented their greenery and plan to celebrate their grand opening of their rooftop garden this Saturday (11/23) from 2-4pm. This rooftop launch will be an activity packed afternoon for the entire family. Offering some of Philly’s most renowned food truck vendors, games, crafts, live music, shopping and raffles. Join in with the Passyunk Square community and help support this beneficial project in helping Philly educate our communities on the importance of green living.

Tickets are available now and are just $15 for an adult/ $12 for a Senior Citizen. Your soul will enjoy the sounds of Light Opera, Broadway, Patriotic and Neapolitan songs. This years concert will feature the Bel Canto Lyric Opera Company and Orchestra. All proceeds help benefit musical scholarships for local artists. East Passyunk Crossing receives a small portion of each ticket sold. So join in to help support two worthy causes as you enjoy music from local performers.
Recently reported by Passyunk Post, Pennsport may have some new community members moving in. Although you won’t get to meet your new neighbors just yet! At 6th and Federal, what was once an old PECO Substation has the community buzzing at the talk of 11 new apartments to occupy this building. This location has sat empty for what feels like forever, while talk for changes have been heard over the last couple years . Talk hasn’t got them that far.

A zoning use change was updated last week which has approved the building for 11 new apartments. Interior demolition permits had been approved last year. Although no construction permits have been approved yet. So please don’t hold your breath hoping to see a bulldozer. Dickinson Square West Civic Association has been actively involved in following the progress of this development. You can also join the community and voice your opinions and concerns at their general membership meeting, Tuesday, October 15th at 7 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Church (410 Wharton Street). We look forward to following this new development and hope to see some construction permits sooner than later.
And what will happen to that iconic sign?! Donate the sign to a museum, build a bar under this name…ideas are still being brought to the table. East Passyunk Crossing Zoning Committee has reviewed the proposal for a 59 foot, 5 story apartment complex to take the place of King of Jeans. This project will consist of 16 apartments; 8 one bedroom units and 8 two bedroom units.

The plan is to keep the ground level open for retail space while floors two through five would be apartments. Furnished with stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and hard wood floors, Kaplan (the commercial real estate developer for this project) feels this project would transform the neighborhood. Kaplan as also worked on other large scale developments including the shopping center with IKea in South Philadelphia as well as the shopping center with Lowes at 52nd and Jefferson.

With parking already scarce in this are, residents would not be allowed to obtain parking permits. Maybe these apartments should be targeted to the bicycle community?! We should hope to see some initial changes in about six months to a year. This plan was favored by five and denied by three at the EPX zoning meeting. Maybe the ZBA will see eye to eye with Kaplan and how this project could transform this area of East Passyunk. We’ll be interested to see where the King of Jeans sign will end up.
Passyunk Square Civic Association is holding their annual home tour this October. If you live in the Passyunk Area (between Broad and 6th, Washington and Tasker) you can participate in their house tour. Do you just love your humble abode? On Saturday October 12th you can open your doors to neighbors and community members to inspire and engage them on design and architectural ideas. Meet your neighbors and socialize as they ‘ooo and aww’ over your eye for design. This event will be from 12-4pm. Participants must buy a ticket. Deadline for submission is September 6th. What a fun way to meet and greet while you gain inspiration!
