Broad and Washington May See Some Changes.. We Hope!

Recently, a new proposal was heard for the huge vacant lot that sits at Broad and Washington, on the edge of Bella Vista and Passyunk Square. Remember the days of tents and Cirque du Soleil? Elisabeth Garson, a freelance creative director started with a big idea last year. A large scale, outdoor food and flea market with music and activities from March through September.

This proposed project “The Philadelphia Arts Market”, will host craft and flea market vendors, Philly’s favorite food trucks, a stage for local musicians, designated fitness areas and more. The mission is to create weekend ‘must-do’ activities for locals and visitors. Businesses can become engaged through sponsorships and funding while this attraction will be targeting families, young and old. This space is to be viewed as a weekend hot spot making use of this abandoned, eye sore lot.

Two alternate sites were mentioned in case this proposal is denied; one at Columbus and Reed and the other at Columbus and Oregon. Broad and Washington seem much more centralized that we are excited to follow this proposal. We hope to see this space transform into a weekend landmark for these neighborhoods.  To view more information on Elisabeth and her proposal click here.

Fante-Leon Pool Replaced by Triplex

The old swimming pool. Courtesy Naked Philly.

Gone is the old Fante-Leon Pool, once one of Bella Vista‘s premier recreation sites, and its beautiful 1920s brickwork. In its place rises, reports Naked Philly, what (according to L&I) will be a triplex.

New…and green! (Literally.) Courtesy Naked Philly.

Shame about the façade, but may we recommend its location? Just off the Italian Market, the single most awesome business district in a city stuffed with awesome business districts, chock full of fresh, delicious, local produce, meats, and cheeses. And we couldn’t forget about all that excellent Vietnamese food down on Washington! Mmmm food heaven…

Dilworth House

A brouhaha on Washington Square? Yes indeed–for the better part of a decade now, a major condo proposal has lingered on its east side, behind 1950s-mayor Richardson Dilworth’s former residence, bisecting the two halves of the Athenaeum. This Turchi offering, including an expansion of that storied institution into Dilworth’s house financed by a 15-story Robert Venturi-designed condo structure behind, has caught the attention (and wrath) of preservation advocates, and a long train of Plan Philly stories.

Update: Commonwealth Court upholds Dilworth House appeal

The proposal. Courtesy Plan Philly.

So, as the developer and the community fight one another, the site sits, a minor black hole on the square’s duller east side.

Stay tuned–we will have more information as and when court rulings happen it becomes available!

Big New Senior Center Going Up by Italian Market

Wooden

If you’ve been to the corner of 9th and Washington in the Italian Market lately, you’ll have noticed some wood framing sticking up nearby. Take a turn at Ellsworth, a block south, and there it is.

This extremely large new Italian Market senior center is to be called the Cedars Villa, according to the on-site render. K&A Architecture is responsible for the design, and it will have 64 apartments, 25 parking spaces, a community garden, and did we mention that it’s oh-so-close to the Italian Market? Seriously, if you’re eligible, get over there and check it out, it’s awesome.

As it gets closer to the finish line, expect us to check back in on it every so often!
